July 18 NELSON MANDELA DAY

Nelson Mandela, human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker, and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa, devoted his life to the service of humanity.

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in July 2009 by the UN, inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier that the next generation would take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices. He said, “it is in your hands now”.

Now it’s in our hands to make a difference in our communities and country. Everyone has the responsibility and the capacity to change the world for the better through small acts to large.

As we celebrate Mandela’s life and legacy, we must foster a global movement to change the world for the better.
